SHEEP AND CATTLE WARS SCREENING
6:00pm-8:00pm, 462 Ute Avenue
Western Slope is home to many farmers and ranchers, but did you know that sheep ranchers and cattle ranchers didn’t really see “eye to

eye”? That’s what Colorado Experience’s producer Dan Garrison explores, as he finds out the history of “Sheep and Cattle Wars” in the Western Slope. For more than forty years, from the last decades of the 19th Century through the third decade of the 20th Century, Colorado sheep men and cattlemen waged a running range war over the high meadows, winter pastures and well-watered valleys of the Western Slope. By removing the Ute Indians, encouraging homesteading, irrigation and forestation, the federal government started a stampede for the possession of freed up or cheapened land. The strife was heightened when it became a fight pitting mostly Anglo cowboys against many Mexican and Basque shepherds. And the senseless slaughter of men and animals that was both condemned and mythologized in tales of the “bloody grass” battles ended only when Colorado Congressman Edward Taylor’s Grazing Act of 1934 became the law of the modern West, protecting public lands from potential devastation by regulating their private uses and abuses. On behalf of Rocky Mountain PBS, I extend an invitation to our Colorado Experience screening, “Sheep and Cattle Wars” on December 5th from 6pm to 8pm at the Museum of the West in the Whitman Building. We will have a reception before with complimentary wine from the museum and appetizers to enjoy. After we show “Sheep and Cattle Wars”, there will be a panel discussion with two local experts and two interviewees from the episode. Feel free to RSVP on our Facebook page http://bit.ly/2SYfLrP or Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/e/colorado-experience-sheep-and-cattle-wars-screening-tickets-52055698997 I look forward to seeing you at the show!
