A Commitment to Community

KAFM's commitment to our community goes back many years.

KAFM In 1992, when Colorado Public Radio made the decision to do all its programming out of Denver, Grand Junction was left with no locally produced programming that reflected the needs of our community.  A group of committed citizens came together to found a community station that would serve those needs. Today, KAFM 88.1 Community Radio has become a vital resource for the community it serves. Of the more than 12,000 radio stations in the U.S., only about 200 are true local community stations like KAFM.  The Grand Valley can be very proud to have created a place where the voices of so many can come together in friendship and mutual respect.  We know of no other place like it.

KAFM 88.1 strives constantly for diversity and inclusivity in all areas. Our volunteers and members come from every part of our community. Young and old -– men, women and children of all ages -- find KAFM to be a place where they can learn and grow.  In 2009, 240 volunteers contributed over 15,000 hours to the station's projects and to our community.  That's over $324,000 of in-kind support and places KAFM 88.1 near the top of volunteer organizations in the Grand Valley.
