In 2010 and 2011, Alpine Archaeological Consultants of Montrose conducted research on and searched for evidence of the Old Spanish Trail in Colorado and Utah as part of the Bureau of Land Management's National Historic Trails Project. As a result of the project, Alpine documented 69 miles of the route in Colorado and 204 miles in Utah. This lecture will focus on the evidence Alpine found in western Colorado and also include a bit about what was found in Utah. It will provide information about the research they undertook to focus their fieldwork efforts, what they actually identified on the ground, how later travel has altered the original trail or left portions intact, and discoveries they have made since the project was concluded, because they can't seem to stop looking!
