Blood, Sweat & Cheers

Humanists Doing Good is encouraging everyone this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to turn a possible day off from work into a day of service. The Blood, Sweat and Cheers event has multiple ways that people can celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. while also benefiting the local community. People may choose to donate blood to the St. Mary’s bloodmobile that will be present, they can volunteer to make improvements at a community garden, and they can celebrate the day with others with food and drink after the event. The Blood, Sweat and Cheers event takes place on January 21st from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the community garden located at 5th Street and Chipeta Avenue.

One of the primary goals of the day is to rejuvenate raised garden boxes that are used by the Multiple Sclerosis Society so that people with multiple sclerosis can carry out recreational gardening during the warmer months of the year. The garden boxes have been present at the site for a few years and are now in need of some repairs and rejuvenation. Adding to the theme of service to others, the St. Mary’s bloodmobile will be present to draw blood in a comfortable and climate-controlled environment. This will also allow volunteers a place to warm up while still helping others. To cap off the event, people will be encouraged to head on down to The Ale House at 2531 North 12th Street to celebrate and further get to know fellow compassionate people from the community.

“We know the weather is likely to be chilly, but we hope people will come out to honor the legacy and positive message of helping others that Martin Luther King, Jr. promoted,” said Jesse Bond, executive director of Humanists Doing Good. It is recommended that anyone planning to participate should dress in warm layered clothing and that they bring gloves if planning to do volunteer work.
