On Saturday, April 24, the Radio Room at KAFM will host Mike Gwinn and the North Fork Flyers. Mike Gwinn and the North Fork Flyers have been together in various configurations for about five years. Combining the elements of jazz, rock and pop in a unique area of Western Colorado dominated by bluegrass and country, the band brings an original sound to the Western Slope and rave reviews follow wherever they perform. Mike Gwinn and the North Fork Flyers are Western Colorado’s premier jazz/pop quintet. The band features Willy Wright on tenor sax and flute, John White on alto sax, flute and bass, Tony Peters on trombone and bass, Justin Hess on drums and Mike Gwinn, band leader, guitar and vocals. The band has been featured at the Telluride Jazz Celebration, Rainier Park Stage and has performed throughout Western Colorado in clubs and concerts. They draw from a broad range of American songbook standards as well as original compositions by Mike. Great arrangements of tunes by Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Lambert Hendricks and Ross, Mose Allison, Tower of Power, Robbin Ford and others are highlighted by this exciting group. Mike Gwinn has been performing and writing as a singer and guitarist since the late '50s in bands and solo. Influenced at an early age by his father, Bill Gwinn, who had a popular musical quiz show in the early days of television, WHAT'S THE NAME OF THAT SONG?, Mike began learning diverse styles of music ranging from the bossa nova of Jobim and Gilberto, to Jimmy Reed and beyond. Mike's vocal style is comparable to Chet Baker, Lambert Hendricks and Ross and Michael Franks, but very original. Guitar influences include Charlie Bird, Laurindo Almeida, Barney Kessel and others. A founding member of the folk/rock/jam band, Gabriel Gladstar, Mike toured the West Coast of California in a converted school bus and did concerts with the likes of the Sons of Champion, Paul Winter Consort, Jackson Browne, Leon Russell, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and others. He appeared in the first Telluride Jazz Festival in 1976 with the be-bop jazz duo Michael and Megan on the same bill with Sarah Vaughn, Dizzie Gillespie, the Jazz Crusaders and a line-up of great stars. Mike has several CDs with the most current, FLYIN' HOME. Mike and the quartet are based in Paonia, Colorado and perform throughout Western Colorado. This concert event is sponsored by American Maid.
